Our Nature Education Philosophy
Education Programs should provide students an opportunity to engage in a healthy interactive relationship with themselves and the planet around them. We strive to achieve these goals through teaching:
* the concept "Active Citizenship"This is key in teaching that what we do matters; that each of us can and does play a part in our world and in our lives, and; that our individual actions count.
* an "Emphasis on Solutions"and how our personal understanding of natural systems is key to learning about how to work with the environment. The planet is a living organism and the environment surrounding us is a part of a greater whole of that living organism. Every natural habitat is important and has evolved for a reason (just as we have). We have the ability and responsibility to learn from and work with the environment and this is truly a great adventure!
* a "Kinesthetic Experience"of being in nature. To witness a flock of pelicans moving as one; to engage in the study of natural decomposition and the new life that arises out of an old log; to watch a woodpecker making a nest hole in a tree over a three day period, these are the experiences that encourage an appreciation of life and an understanding of inter-connectivity that make our world real. It is these experiences and an inter-disciplinary education model, to present them, that connect us to the impact of our lives, all we do has real meaning and real outcomes.
