Home Schooling Programs

Overview

Full Circle Adventures provides curriculum based school programming for students in grades 1-7 that directly apply to Science or Social Studies. Our focus of study is on particular aspects of eco-systems, including water, trees, sunlight, plant and animal adaptations and micro-food chains. Programs are typically run in Calgary city parks. A minimum of three family groups is required for a booking. Our maximum per course is seven family groups. We can meet at a natural area in your neighborhood.

Please contact us to book a date for your group and discuss the science units that you are working on. We then provide an outdoor class for your home schooling group to gain experiential knowledge, out of doors in a safe environment. You can book a minimum of a 50 minute program or, up to a half day, depending on your group size and program requirements.

Needs of Native Species and Their Habitats
What is a habitat? What makes it native to our area? What components need to be in place to create a natural landscape? What plants and insects interact together to ensure a healthy habitat? How does climate, water and sunlight affect a habitat?

These and more are the types of questions posed and answered, as the class explores and gains an understanding of an eco-system and how it functions.

Plant and Animal Adaptations
This exploratory program studies the natural habitat to observe the adaptations found in the plant, animal and insect communities that live there.

Students will learn to answer curriculum specific questions such as:1. How do plants adapt to where they live? 2. How do plants and animals adapt to the changing seasons? 3. What are the life cycles of insects and how do plants play a role in these life cycles? Contact us to discuss your needs.

Grades 5 - 7 Programming

Indoor Program - Plants, People and Perspective
This introduction to the uses of many local and introduced plants tells the story of the Human relationships to plants. The world view of the early Europeans, the first nations and the cattle ranchers is revealed by how each culture views and deals with plants in their habitats. This program introduces the uses and applications of some plants as tools, clothing and food. Plant examples are available for students to smell and touch. Included in this program is an option of sampling tea made with local plants.

Outdoor Program
Students will have an opportunity to develop an appreciation of the use of plants as food and fibre in the natural world around them. Knowledge from the early Europeans and what we know of native history helps us understand the value of plant identification. The leaf structures, aromas and textures of plants provides a “hands on” method for plant identification. Students learn how different world views of plants has altered Alberta landscapes forever and it is our viewpoint that continues to determine what landscapes are preserved or changed.

Locations

Calgary City Parks such as Edworthy, Glenmore and River Park provide natural eco-systems suitable for outdoor instruction.
