Native Plants and Their Cultural Uses – Field Trip Spring/Fall 2009
This field trip to a local Calgary Park, the Cross Conservation Area or the Cochrane Ranche Historic Site encourages students to place plants to a habitat. Possible locations for seasonal dwellings of early peoples will be explored through discussions based on the plants that are in that habitat, water sources etc.
Students will also learn to distinguish the qualities of plants, textures and aromas that aid in the identification of a plant and its early uses. The role of the plant in the eco-system and the dynamic between wildlife and natural features ties the story together to aid students in understanding food and fibre uses within a local eco-system.
Time: Price: $125 instructor fee for a single class +GST (add $115 for each additional class up to a maximum of three classes per session +GST)
"We spent a very pleasant day with Julie, exploring the Weaselhead Area. Julie shared a wealth of information with us on the early native people and the plants of the region. We felt the field experience greatly enhanced our science unit on "Plants for Food and Fibre."

"On a beautiful warm day in October, all our grade 7 students were guided through Wine Glass Ranch and were able to experience the land, the weather, and the living conditions that our First Nations people might have experienced 200 or more years ago. With Julie’s knowledge, and with the collaboration of the Wine Glass Ranch owners, my students had hands on experience determining the value of a plant for medicinal, ceremonial, or decorative purposes. Reverence for the land was emphasized through the respect that was interfused in the lessons. Simple anthropological studies were employed studying a Stoney camping site that was over 200 years old. Old fashioned story telling was warm and tender and touched the heart(s) of our students. In conclusion, our students walked away with more reverence for the land, the animals, the First Nations people who thrived in the area, and respect for both the ranchers and the aboriginals who became good neighbours and continue to be so to this day. This program touched on several aspects of our curriculum and our AISI projects. In fact the Science aspect was so impressive, our Science teacher booked another in class session for our school. Full Circle Adventures is a highly worthwhile program that I would recommend wholeheartedly!"
